For all projects
Identify any hazards and eliminate as part of the design process – This demands a systematic and rigorous approach setting hazard reduction at the centre of the design process
Reduce risks as an integral part of the design process – Again a systematic approach is required
Provide information about any remaining risks – Clearly it is not always possible to reduce risks to an entirely satisfactory level so it becomes very important that Designers make sure that risks remaining, are communicated to others that need to know about it
For Notifiable projects
Ensure that the Client is aware of their duties and that a CDM coordinator has been appointed – Nb. Designers may not carry out any detailed design work until a CDM coordinator has been appointed. Clearly without a CDM-C in place the co-ordination of the design process is likely to be prejudiced and as such it would be unsafe to allow it to proceed.
Provide all information reasonably required for the Health and Safety File – A common duty throughout the Regulations
